We spotted the Welney Water Tower as sunset was approaching on the evening of our day of "Fen Hunting". This beautiful architectural structure stands in a field behind the Church of St Mary the Virgin. I headed into the field full of chest high stinging nettles to photograph from different angles. On emerging we met the couple who owned the land who now in their eighties, she has lived there since the age of two in a bungalow which prior to them belonged to her grandfather. In 1935 he sold the ten foot by ten foot land to the water board to build the now disused tower.
I photographed a number of Water Towers that day, each quite a different architectural style, it really is interesting thinking about their historical significance. In this I am photographing, handholding my Nikon FM3.
