Part of a series of street photography captured in Kowloon in 2016. "The idea for the series was how I could represent the intrinsic nature of Hong Kong, the idea of layers and light. Through most of the work there is a linear pattern alongside a raw distressed quality with a pop of Pop Art.
Captured at the Star Ferry Terminal, the reflective surface makes the character appear to float. The word 'Control' is an interesting one to have come away with as it is a great reflection of Hong Kong, politically society is very controlled but without it this great number of people would not function. Interestingly 'Control' was the 2011 Chinese character of the year.
I was blind to the meaning of all the characters I photographed, it was purely aesthetic, coming away and learning about their meaning has taken the project further." Richard Heeps
