This is a Soviet Air Force Hanger in former East Germany. The site had been a Luftwaffe Base from World War II and during the cold war it was requisitioned.
My reason for being there was the Hot Heads East Hot Rod Club Drag Racing Event. As a fan of the sport I visited as a photographer to capture authentic Drag Racing.
The picture captures beautiful brutalist architecture, the concave hanger roof juxtaposed with the concrete and the softness of the trees with an extremely atmospheric light. Inside there it had a strange cold presence which was the opposite to the scorching hot day. My work tends to take the form of journey, and I think this piece does convey a metaphorical sense of a journey. As I went to photograph a Drag Racing event I did not take my tripod which lead me to perch my camera, my Mamiya RB67, on a low object which forced a lower viewer point than I might have taken with a tripod but it really adds to the perspective of the composition.
